On September 28, 2024 from 10am-3pm visit the “Agricultural History of Trafalgar Township” at the restored Palermo schoolhouse in northwest Oakville (Dundas & Bronte Road). We have lots of activities for kids this year. Kids can get free popcorn, apples and skipping rope. For more details see Heritage Day 2024
- The World of Bees – listen and see the little pollinators in action by our friends from BackedbyBees, a great safe learning opportunity to get up close to the beehive.
- Live Farm Animals – an opportunity for kids to get up close to animals from the farm.
- The Old Schoolhouse – back to the 1 room schoolhouse days, chalkboards, wooden desks, readers and spellers, and of course, meet the teacher ringing the bell for class. Hang out in and sit in desks at the one room schoolhouse.
- Photo with the Head Teacher – dressed in period costume, have your photo taken with the teacher! Maybe also sneak a candy from the teacher’s candy jar!
- Life on the Farm – live farm animals and displays of early farming life. Climb aboard some of the tractors, ploughs and wagons used on the farm. Try ‘milking‘ the cow. We have a rope making machine to make skipping ropes. See inside the portable blacksmith’s wagon!
- Family Fun behind the Old Schoolhouse – let’s do laundry as it was 100 years ago, washboards and a bubble station. Our giant popcorn machine will be operating at capacity! Visit with a variety of farm animals in a welcoming environment and ask questions of the handler.
- Historical Farm Machinery – there will be a collection of historical ploughs, tractors, dairy wagons, portable blacksmith shop, amongst other machinery reflecting life on the farm in early Trafalgar Township. Farm machinery provided by SJC Museum.
- The Old Palermo Country Store – displaying and selling goods as it may have in days gone by! Farm goods as well as supplies you might have needed in 1910! We’ll have apples from Wheelbarrow Orchards!
- Families and Local History – learn about family histories, walking tours of Palermo, view the archives online with pictures and stories of times gone by in Trafalgar Township
- Historical Tours – Palermo United Church, Palermo Historical Houses and Palermo Pioneer Cemetery and end the tour at the Palermo Pub.
